Access Control Vs Traditional Lock and Key Systems – Pros And Cons

The traditional lock and key system is a tried and tested security solution that has served the world very well for hundreds of years, and the advancement of technology to offer alternative solutions, is not because the traditional key no longer works. But it does have limitations, and the benefits supplied by access control systems have started to heavily outweigh traditional keys, to the extent that they are slowly becoming obsolete.

The pros and cons of traditional keys

It is true that a traditional lock and key system requires very little maintenance, has very few set-up costs and doesn’t require a power source. However, it is possible for physical keys to be lost, forgotten or copied, and there is no audit trail to enable you to monitor when they have been used. It can also be a burden to manage the distribution of keys, particularly where there has been a security breach and you may need to amend the controls you have in place.

The pros and cons of access control systems

When assessing the pros and cons of access control systems, it is fair to say there can be high initial costs involved, and there is a power source needed which could compromise the system in some circumstances, were it to lose power. There is also a need to have a dedicated system manager with some technical knowledge. However, the benefits of access control are plentiful and wide-ranging. These include:

  • Convenience – Contactless access control systems are much faster to operate than fumbling around with a physical key. In most cases people are flashing a smartphone, a card or fob, presenting a biometric feature or are inputting a four-digit code.
  • Flexible – You can tailor the type of system to suit the size, nature and needs of your workforce. These can be a biometric feature, a smartphone app, a code or flashing a card or fob.
  • Secure – The access type you choose won’t be able to be copied or stolen, and you can still put extra security controls in place, such as encryption, two-step verification etc. You can also very easily change a code or update an app, if a security breach has occurred, where as with a key, you would need to physically recall and redistribute all the keys.
  • Integration – Access control systems can be integrated to work with CCTV, alarm systems and other smart systems in a building. You can also use the data for HR purposes.
  • Scalable – It is very easy to add new users and remove old ones with a centrally managed control system.
  • Monitoring – Access control systems can be monitored in terms of when and who is accessing a building, which is useful for safety and HR purposes.
  • Central management – The whole system can be monitored, managed and controlled by a single person, who could be located remotely.
