Em-B Introduces Certified Fire Doors

When people think about certified fire doors, they often focus on the door itself. Is it FD30 or FD60? Has it been tested? Does it carry the right certification? These are important questions, but they only tell part of the story.

A fire door is not a single product. It is part of a complete door set that includes the frame, glazing, seals, ironmongery, access control equipment and, increasingly, door automation. Each element plays a role in ensuring the door performs as intended in the event of a fire. If one component is incompatible, incorrectly specified or poorly installed, the performance of the whole assembly can be compromised.

It is one of the reasons why Em-B Solutions has expanded its offering to include independently certified fire door sets. For nearly 60 years, we have helped architects, contractors and building owners specify the right ironmongery, access control and door automation systems for projects across the UK. As regulations evolve and the focus on building safety continues to increase, we believe the industry needs a more joined-up approach to doors and door sets.

Fire door compliance is becoming more complex

The scrutiny placed on fire safety products has increased significantly in recent years, and rightly so. Building owners, responsible persons, contractors and specifiers are all under greater pressure to demonstrate compliance, maintain accurate records and ensure products perform as expected throughout the life of a building.

At the same time, the regulatory landscape is changing. The industry is preparing for the transition away from BS 476 testing towards the European framework of BS EN 1634 and BS EN 13501. While existing BS 476-certified products remain valid, the direction of travel is clear. Manufacturers, certification bodies and specifiers are already planning for a future where European classification becomes the standard approach.

For architects and contractors, this creates additional challenges. It is no longer enough simply to choose a certified door leaf and assume compliance will follow. The entire door set must be considered.

A fire door set is only as strong as its weakest component

A certified door leaf is important, but it is only one part of the equation. Frames, glazing systems, intumescent seals, hinges, locks, closers, access control equipment and automation systems all contribute to the overall performance of the door set.

In practice, many compliance issues arise not because the door itself is defective, but because components have been substituted, altered or specified without fully understanding how they interact with the tested assembly.

This is particularly relevant on larger projects where multiple trades may be involved in procurement and installation. A door set is only as compliant as its least compliant component. That is why Em-B’s approach focuses on the complete system rather than individual products.

More choice for architects and designers

One of the frustrations often encountered during the specification of certified fire doors is the lack of flexibility offered by some door set manufacturers. Many of them understandably focus on supplying products that fit within their standard manufacturing processes. However, this can sometimes limit the choice of hardware, finishes, access control systems or automation solutions available to the project team. For architects, this can create tension between design intent and compliance requirements.

Our approach is different. Because we already have extensive expertise in architectural ironmongery, access control, and door automation, we can coordinate these elements as part of the wider door set specification. This provides greater flexibility when selecting hardware finishes, access control systems and specialist solutions while maintaining compliance with the relevant test evidence and certification requirements. The result is a door set that meets performance requirements without forcing unnecessary compromises on design.

Supporting complex and specialist projects

Not every project fits neatly into a standard catalogue. Healthcare facilities, heritage buildings, education projects, hospitality developments and high-end residential schemes often have requirements that fall outside the mainstream.

These projects may require specialist hardware, enhanced accessibility, bespoke finishes, integrated access control or discreet automation systems. In heritage environments, there is often an additional need to balance modern performance requirements with the building’s character.

These are exactly the types of projects Em-B has built its reputation on. By combining certified fire doors with our existing expertise in ironmongery, automation and access control, we can help project teams navigate more complex requirements without losing sight of compliance.

Independent certification and long-term assurance

Our fire door set offering is supported by independent third-party certification through BM TRADA. Third-party certification provides assurance that products are manufactured consistently and continue to meet the requirements set by the supporting test evidence. It also provides traceability and independent oversight, which are increasingly important considerations for building owners and responsible persons.

However, certification is only one part of the process. The industry has traditionally focused on certifying products. Increasingly, attention is turning towards the performance of complete systems and the need for clear accountability throughout the supply chain.

This thinking sits at the heart of Em-B’s developing Door Compliance and Assurance Framework, which aims to provide customers with confidence that the various elements of a door set have been properly considered, coordinated and specified to work together.

Looking ahead

The fire door market is entering a period of significant change with new regulations, evolving standards and increased scrutiny creating challenges and opportunities for the construction industry.

For Em-B, the move into certified fire door sets is a natural extension of the services we already provide. It allows us to bring together doors, ironmongery, access control and automation into a coordinated solution that reflects how buildings actually operate.

Most importantly, it enables us to support architects, contractors and building owners with a more joined-up approach to compliance, performance and design.
