How Sustainable Hardware is Changing Door Specification

Sustainability has not replaced the traditional drivers behind architectural ironmongery specification. Sustainable hardware is vital, but compliance, accessibility, security, durability and cost remain central to every project. What has changed is the number of additional questions now being asked alongside them.

A decade ago, most discussions about hardware specifications focused on performance, aesthetics, and budget. Today, architects and specifiers are increasingly being asked about embodied carbon, recycled content, responsible sourcing, product lifespan and environmental data. In many cases, those questions are coming from clients, contractors and sustainability consultants rather than from within the ironmongery sector itself.

The result is a subtle but important shift in how hardware is evaluated, specified and procured.

No one is suggesting that sustainability should override performance. A door closer that fails after three years is not a success story simply because it has a low-carbon datasheet. But sustainability considerations are increasingly sitting alongside the traditional requirements of architectural ironmongery, and that is changing the conversation.

Can You Provide Environmental Information?

One of the most noticeable changes is the growing demand for product data. Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), recycled content information and responsible sourcing policies were once specialist topics that appeared mainly on major infrastructure projects or sustainability-led developments. Increasingly, they are filtering into more mainstream construction projects.

That does not necessarily mean every project team is scrutinising lifecycle assessments in forensic detail. More often, clients want reassurance that environmental considerations have been taken seriously and that products have been selected with thought rather than habit.

For manufacturers and suppliers, that means providing more information than ever before.

The days when a specification consisted purely of performance data and product dimensions are gradually disappearing. Environmental credentials are becoming part of the discussion, too.

How Long Is It Expected To Last?

This is perhaps the most interesting change of all. For years, sustainability discussions in construction focused heavily on materials. Increasingly, they are focusing on lifespan.

A product that remains in service for twenty years generally creates less environmental impact than one that needs replacing every five years, regardless of how sustainable the original manufacturing process may have been. That shift is encouraging more conversations around durability, maintenance requirements and whole-life cost.

Hospitals, schools and commercial buildings provide good examples. These are environments where doors are used constantly, often under demanding conditions. Hardware that performs reliably over the long term reduces maintenance interventions, replacement cycles and disruption for building users. In other words, sustainability is becoming closely linked to operational performance. That is a healthy development because it moves the conversation away from greenwashing and towards real-world outcomes.

Do We Actually Need To Replace It?

Refurbishment projects are changing the way many people think about sustainability.

Historically, refurbishment often meant stripping out existing hardware and starting again. Today, there is increasing interest in understanding what can realistically be retained, restored or adapted.

Heritage projects have always required this sort of thinking, but the principle is spreading more widely. At Grantley Hall, for example, significant quantities of original ironmongery were carefully assessed, restored, and reintegrated into the building’s wider refurbishment. The decision was driven partly by heritage considerations, but it also reflected a growing recognition that replacing serviceable products is not always the most sensible option.

That approach raises an interesting question for the wider industry.

Sustainability is increasingly prompting specifiers to ask not simply “What should we install?” but “What can we keep?”. That represents a significant shift in mindset.

What Happens When The Building Changes?

Buildings rarely remain static. Offices become residential developments, hotels are refurbished, schools expand, healthcare facilities adapt to new operational requirements, occupiers come and go.

Increasingly, clients want buildings that can evolve without requiring wholesale replacement of their components every time circumstances change. And that has implications for architectural ironmongery.

Products that can be maintained, upgraded or adapted over time become more attractive. Access control systems that can scale with changing user requirements, sustainable hardware that remains aesthetically relevant through refurbishment cycles, products supported by the long-term availability of spare parts.

Adaptability is becoming part of the sustainability conversation because it helps reduce waste and extend the useful life of buildings.

Sustainability Is Not Replacing Good Specification

One of the risks in any sustainability discussion is creating the impression that environmental considerations exist separately from everything else. In reality, good specification has always involved balancing multiple factors: aesthetics, compliance, accessibility, security, and, of course, budget matters. Sustainability has joined that list, but it is not replacing the others.

What Questions Should Architects Be Asking about Sustainable Hardware

  • Where do the materials come from?
  • How long will the product remain in service?
  • Can it be maintained?
  • Can it be adapted?
  • Will it still be doing its job in twenty years?

The Direction Of Travel

The architectural ironmongery sector is probably not the first part of the construction industry that comes to mind when people think about sustainability. But the conversation is changing.

Manufacturers are publishing more environmental data and in turn, specifiers are asking more questions about sourcing and lifecycle performance. Clients are looking more closely at how products contribute to wider sustainability objectives.
